Getting Started Using Clickers:

  • Familiarize yourself with the Interwrite PRS RF Clicker
  • You teach in a classroom with an LCD projector
  • You have ordered the student clickers through the bookstore. The bookstore orders PRS RF clickers according to your requirements. Clickers must be ordered each semester!
  • You have completed the Hub Request Form and returned the form to Donna Mellen - email request: donna_mellen@uml.edu
  • The Response software has been downloaded to your classroom/personal computer
  • You have created your class and have learned the basics of operating a session
  • If you are using a classroom computer, you have a USB 2.0 Storage device with at least 1GB of memory available

Pedagogy Considerations:

  • Use clickers for enhancing learning and not for testing and attendance tracking
  • Have a clear grading policy for PRS; including coverage of absences, cheating, technical problems, forgotten clickers, batteries died, etc. and include policies in course syllabus
  • Adjust class time to allow for class discussions (discovery) to enhance or refine content coverage
  • Have a strategy for facilitating discussions with large groups
  • Benefit from others – visit PRS classes and consult with your PRS colleagues (See UML PRS Users Table)

Clicker Course Management Issues:

  • Provide instructions to your students for setting up their clickers and for joining the class utilizing STUDENT RESOURCES.
  • Set aside at least one hour each week for creating/updating/improving PRS questions
  • Set aside at least one hour each week for managing students/PRS issues and tasks

Training:

The Faculty Development Center offers PRS Support and Training:

Using PRS Clickers to Engage Students and Enhance Learning (Clickers 101):

Personal Response Systems are proliferating higher education instruction. Why? Not because it reminds students about reality-show voting. Rather, PRS systems address student engagement, assessment of learning, and proper and intentional use of technology to various extents. UML has moved toward standardization of a robust clicker system. Gone are the days when students had to purchase a different clicker for each class. Join us for a hands-on experience with clickers and begin to think about how you might further engage your students during class and in the learning experience.

[Institute Leader, Donna Mellen will provide continuing technological support to UML faculty who choose to adopt this technology. Contact Donna if you need assistance at 978-934-2925 or donna_mellen@uml.edu]

PRS Clickers for Advanced Users at UML:

Are you using PRS clickers at UML but would like to know how to manage the data? This hands-on institute will focus on the issues of managing session data including grading, attendance, and class rosters. This institute will also explore using clickers for homework and test taking. Preliminary results of active learning, student involvement, immediate feedback, and assessment will be discussed.

[Prerequisite: Participants must have previously taken “Using PRS Clickers to Engage Students and Enhance Learning”]
