Tech Tip - Joining a Class:

This Tech Tip outlines an orderly way to start your Sessions to ensure that all
your students, even those who are late to class will be able to easily join the
class and participate in the Session.

Here is a very simplified view of what happens when you start a Session:

The Interwrite Response Receiver sends out an invitation to join the Class by way of
the Class channel it has selected. The Receiver listens for signals from RF
Clickers that are joining the Class. When it receives a join request, the Receiver
sends a message back to the Clicker that it can join the Class. After a PRS
Question has started, the invitation to join the Class happens less frequently,
so students trying to join at that time may not be able to. And, the larger the
class, the more profound the problem.

Here are the recommendations for ensuring a trouble-free session:

  • Load your laptop or flash/external drive
  • Load the PRS Receiver
  • Open Response software from your laptop or flash drive
  • Ask Questions: Click Collect Responses or Open MS PowerPoint
  • Choose the appropriate class and type of lesson
  • Tell you students to join the class by turning on the PRS RF units and selecting the frequency
  • Keep an eye on the Joined Counter to determine the join rate
  • Do not start your first question until it looks as though all of the students in attendance have joined
  • You are ready to start your first question!
